How NPS is calculated

Everyone answers one question: how likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague? on a scale from 0 to 10. People who answer 9 or 10 are promoters, 7 or 8 are passives, and 0 to 6 are detractors.

Your Net Promoter Score is the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors. Passives count towards the total but not towards the score. The result runs from −100 (everyone is a detractor) to +100 (everyone is a promoter).

Example: 200 responses with 110 promoters (55%), 50 passives and 40 detractors (20%) give an NPS of 55 − 20 = +35.

What is a good NPS?

Anything above 0 means more people would recommend you than warn others off. Many teams treat +30 and above as strong and +70 as exceptional, but normal scores vary a lot by industry — a utility and a boutique hotel shouldn't be judged on the same scale.

The most useful comparison is with yourself: run the same survey every quarter and watch the trend, and always read why people gave the score they did.

Common questions

Why don't passives affect the score?
Passives are satisfied but not enthusiastic, so NPS leaves them out of the subtraction. They still count in the total, which is why lots of passives pull the score towards zero.
How many responses do I need?
Enough that a handful of answers can't swing it. Below about 30 responses the score moves a lot from one survey to the next — our sample size calculator can tell you more precisely.
Is NPS shown as a percentage?
No. It's written as a plain number, like +35 or −10, even though it's made from two percentages.
